Listening Guide with Comments, Pictures, and Links for this Week's Pet Fish Talk Show

Segment One.
First we quickly summarize last week's show. Then ...

Jim from Dayton, Ohio, calls and we talk about the Mbuna Cichlids from Lake Malawi in East Africa. Click here for information about Mbunas, and click here for a story about the big Mbuna aquarium in Giselle's Restaurant a long time ago. Jim got a used 150-gallon aquarium, which he now has some Electric Blue Haps and some "Ice Blue" Labidochromis caeruleus.

Nevin explains there are three somewhat incompatible groups of fish in Lake Malawi: (1) the Mbuna that live around the piles of huge rocks, (2) the Haps that live over the sand between the piles of rocks, and (3) the Utaka that live offshore and in deeper waters.

We tell Jim a story about hybrid African Cichlids. Long ago the Bailey Brothers cross-bred many African Cichlids, including the fish that were called Haplochromis livingstonii and polystigma. Paul Loiselle visited our basement, carefully examined our hybrids, and said, "This raises a very serious question, shall we call these hybrids Polystonii or Livingstigma?"

Here is a picture of a Lamprologus calvus near a pile of rocks in a big aquarium. During this week's Pet Fish Talk Show we talk with Jim from Dayton about Calvus, and why you don't usually see this fish for sale in regular pet stores.

Segment Two.
We continue to talk about Jim's questions about how to sell fish like Calvus.

Josh from Ohio calls and we continue to talk about his aquarium, a 20-gallon, which turned out to be a much better deal that the 30-gallon hex-aquarium, that he planned to buy. Tom asks Josh to call back someday and ask to hear the story about the one chinchilla that Tom sold.

David from East Hampton, Massachusetts, calls and says he's raising German Red Peacocks from Lake Malawi in East Africa. David estimates there are 80 to 100 species of Peacocks listed on the Cichlid Forum web site.

David says his aquarium has lots of tiny air bubbles, and he wonders if the air bubbles could be a problem for his fish. Tom and Nevin discuss their experiences with tiny air bubbles.

David asks us about how to artificially hatch eggs from mouth brooding African Cichlids by tumbling the eggs? David also asks us if we can spawn any kind of fish? We quickly admit that we certainly cannot spawn every species of fish.

Segment Three.
Tom talks about Richard Buttner, a wonderful fish breeder, who Tom and Nevin met and knew long ago, and about learning how to breed tropical fish. Tom says someday he'll tell the story about Bob Parle, who encouraged the Bailey Brothers to artificially hatch mouth brooder eggs a long time ago.

Nevin remembers watching Glowlight Tetras spawn in a small aquarium in his bedroom a long time ago.

Mary from Oxnard says she is so excited to find the fish of her dreams on AquariumFish.net. Tom is confused if she got Swordtails or Mollies, but he's glad she loves her new fish. Click here to read Mary's email.

Here is a picture taken in an aquarium at AquariumFish.net of a dazzling Red Eye Long Fin Male Swordtail. Maybe this is the type that Mary said she got.

Jean says she has a common Plecostomus and wonders how to determine its gender?

Diana says her son is raising an Albino Betta in an aquarium that seems to have some tiny shrimps swimming around. Diana wonders how they got in his aquarium? Tom says they might be osteocods, which are a sign that the aquarium has uneaten food.

"I recently purchased a female Betta. I noticed that she's laid eggs. She's never been in with a male. Are the eggs dead? Should I remove the eggs?" Click here now to go to FantasticBetta.com.

Richard L. says he has a 55-gallon aquarium with a Penguin 330 filter and two Lemon Yellow Cichlids which are swimming up and down the glass. Is this normal?

Tina from Nova Scotia, Canada, has a 20-gallon aquarium with water at pH 5.5 to 6 and the water is soft. Tina wants to know if she can keep Black Skirt Tetras and Congo Tetras. Click here to go to the Search Page in AquariumFish.net and search for information about these Tetras, or click here to go directly to the page with lots of information about Tetras and a list of compatible tank mates.

Bio-Spira is a commercial product that contains the beneficial bacteria that break down the waste in your aquarium. Albert from Las Vegas recommends, "Nitro Max Fresh by Tropical Science ... which is less expensive."

Segment Four.
Frank P. says he, "... has a 125-gallon aquarium with four Emperor 400 filters and 8 large Fancy Goldfish. How many large Goldfish can I keep in this aquarium?" Tom and Nevin recommend testing the water to determine the quality of the water. Click here for information about how to test aquarium water.

Tom and Nevin talk about "Hot" and "Cool or Mild" foods. Remember Goldfish need food labeled for Goldfish because ...

Fred in Commack, New York, says he plays the shows in the archive to learn as much as he can about his fish. He has a 75-gallon aquarium with green algae. Can we give him some hints about how to get rid of it?

Tim used our advice to clear up his cloudy new aquarium. Click here for more about how to clear up aquarium water. Click here for more about how to start a new aquarium.

Evan from Colorado calls and tells us he got 6 new Ghost Shrimp and two more Goldfish that he put in a 10-gallon aquarium with six other Goldfish. Evan plans to soon upgrade to a 20-gallon soon. He also got a new male Betta Fish that is not eating. We talk about what to do with a fish that won't eat and how to avoid buying fish that won't eat. Evan also got a female Betta, and he says he's noticed lately that the fish stores in his area seem to carry female Bettas.

Tisha from Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada says "I am 29 years old and have been successful at breeding my goldfish even though I only have a 20 gallon tank. I noticed that my male goldfish has started vibrating his fins and bending his body then swims really fast sometimes splashes, is this a mating ritual that goldfish do? It was increasing over the last weak and I noticed that other fish started doing it to. I then out in a breeding pom-pom and they didn't lay eggs. Now as we know the conditions have to be perfect for them to lay eggs so I don't know if there is something wrong with them or if this is part of their maturity as fish. Can you help???"

Kay from Texas has a pond with Koi and wonders if she should feed them, when the water is cold? Click here for information about Winter Care for Fish Ponds.
