First
we quickly summarize last
week's show. Then
...
Vince from Ohio
calls about his four
Jack Dempsey
Cichlids that
are not growing, and
he wants to know
what to feed them to
get them to grow. We
give Vince some tips
about how to get his
Dempseys to grow,
including washing
his gravel and then
removing most of it
from his aquarium.
Less gravel is
better in most
freshwater
aquariums.
Ernesto sent us the
picture, shown
above, of his new
100-gallon aquarium
and his Oscar. Click
here to read
Ernesto's email. He
wants to know what
other fish can go in
his new aquarium?
Click
here for more
information about
Oscars, including a
list of compatible tank mates.
Jenny just bought an
African Black
Knifefish and
wonders if it is
compatible with her
Oscars? Click
here for more
about African Black
Knifefish, including
several videos
showing their unique
swimming motion.
Rebekah from West
Virginia calls and
talks about her
snails and the Betta
Fish that she
adopted this week.
We
continue to talk
with Rebekah about
the Betta Fish that
she rescued this
week. We also remind
Rebekah that her
fish bowl needs a
layer of cultured
gravel about 1/4"
deep. Click
here for more
about keeping a
Betta Fish in a
bowl.
Rebekah says she
likes to write
poetry, and she
wrote a poem titled,
"The Pet Fish Talk",
which she reads to
us. Rebekah, we
appreciate your
poem. Thank you.
Adrian from Denver
calls and says he
heard the poem and, "You guys
must be loved!". We
agree with Adrian.
Then Adrian reports
that he moved his
Mystery Snails to
another aquarium,
and those Snails
opened up and
returned to normal.
We talk about why
the snails closed up
in the other
aquarium.
Adrian has more
questions about
managing his African
Cichlid Aquarium.
Click
here for more
about the Mbunas
Cichlids in Adrian's
aquarium, and then
click
here to read the
story about the big
aquarium full of
Mbunas in Giselle's
Restaurant. Adrian
hits the nail on the
head, when he says
an Mbuna Aquarium is
an on going process.
Nevin talks about
the Tilapia Cichlids
living in the huge pond
with the group of Hippopotamus at
the San Diego Zoo.
We read an email
from Mark C., in
Columbus, Georgia,
who wants to know if
a Clown Knife Fish
would be compatible
with his Oscars,
Texas Cichlid, and
Pacu? Click
here to read
Mark's entire email.
Tom and Nevin hope
that Mark will call
Pet Fish Talk every
few weeks and tell
us how these fish
are doing in his
aquarium.
A listener wants to
know how to enhance
the coloration of
Oscar fish? Tom
talks about "Blue
Oscars" and the
natural coloration
of Oscars.
Here's
a picture of a
huge
180-gallon
aquarium that
is jam-packed
full of the
Oscars that
Nevin
mentions
during the
show.
These Oscars
have a unique
pink/orange
coral-like
coloration and
are very
beautiful.
Heidi
T. asks if Pink
Cichlids are the
same as Albino
Cichlids? Tom asks
Nevin, "What is an
albino fish, and
what causes a fish
to be an albino?"
Nevin
mentions
this very
unique and
beautiful
female Pink
Convict
Cichlid with a
black eye,
which shows
much more red
coloration
than most
other female
Pink Convict
Cichlids.
Nevin
also mentions that a
Pink Oscar will
usually have trouble
competing with other
color varieties of
Oscars, unless the
Pink Oscar is bigger
than the other
Oscars.
Len in Victoria, BC,
says he is using an
Emperor 400 filter
in his 50-gallon
aquarium. He plans
to upgrade to a
90-gallon aquarium
and wonders if he
needs more
filtration?
Nevin asks Tom to
tell the story about
Honorio, a very
bright boy in a 4th
grade class that Tom
taught a long time ago.
Humberto F. owns a
50-gallon aquarium
with lots of big
Cichlids, and he
thinks a pair of his
Cichlids have
spawned. He wonders
if should gravel
wash his aquarium?
Josh reports that he
has used the
medication MalaFix,
which has helped
cure sick fish and
never caused a
problem.
Alexander has a
10-gallon aquarium
with several fish,
and he wonders, if
he upgrades from a
Penguin Mini filter
to a Penguin 170,
will he be able to
add more fish?
Dwight asks about
good fish for a
hex-aquarium? Tom
and Nevin talk
generally about
hex-aquariums and
compare them with
rectangular
aquariums like the
ones in our
facilities.
Shawn
from Montreal,
Canada, asks if we
could make Pet Fish
Talk Shows available
as mp3-files that
could be played on a
hand held
mp3-player?
Jonathan says he
enjoyed listening to
the interview with
Dr. Tim Hovanec of
Marineland. Click

listen to that
interview.
Our pal, Josh from
Ohio calls and asks
Tom to tell the
story about selling
a Chinchilla to an
elderly woman a long
time ago. Tom asks
Josh about his fish,
and Josh reports
that his Veil Tail
Angel has a huge
tear in its tail
fin. Josh noticed
that his Paradise
Fish was chasing his
Angels around. Tom
and Nevin talk about
Paradise Fish.
Justin says his
Violet Goby is not
eating, and we give
him some hints about
getting it to eat.
Click
here for more
about Violet
Gobies, which are
also called Dragon
Fish.
Frank has a
125-gallon aquarium
with eight Fancy
Goldfish, and this
aquarium has four
Emperor 400 filters.
Frank wonders if he
can add more
Goldfish to his
aquarium? Tom says
Frank should first
read about how to
test the water in
his aquarium with
his eyes and nose!
Click
here for more
about doing that.
Adam has just
purchased a small
freshwater aquarium
that has something
that looks like water
fleas. Tom says they
might be osteocods
and indicate the
aquarium probably
has uneaten food.
Raul asks if can use
a dedicated garden
hose to refill his
aquarium when
making regular
weekly partial water
changes. We talk
about the
possibility
contaminating an
aquarium by using a
dedicated garden
hose.
