Fish in the News. "Down by the North Saskatchewan River, a thousand goldfish are constantly swimming against water flowing from Edmonton's Gold Bar treatment plant. The fish in the tanks are a modern-day version of canaries in coalmines, helping researchers since last April check the health and environmental impact of medication and pesticides that are flushed down city drains every day. The fish will be studied over a year to find out the effects of their exposure to trace amounts of contamination that remain in treated water." Click here to read the entire story.
The Georgia Aquarium
opens one-of-a-kind "learning loop," a winding path rife with touch tanks, science lessons, and bird's-eye views of some of the biggest tanks and attractions. The aquarium opened the loop to give students and teachers what founder Bernie Marcus felt other aquariums lacked: a formal education and training program with its own dedicated space set apart from regular aquarium visitors. More Fishy News. Biologists and computer scientists are meeting this week at San Diego's Birch Aquarium. "In the ocean, you have a very dense ecology of microbes, particularly in the surface," said project leader Larry Smarr. Samples of ocean surface water will be taken, the microorganism found there will be broken down, and their DNA will be extracted and sequenced. "It's a shotgun approach," Smarr said. "You put the microbes through a blender, and then sequence the fragments of DNA that are floating around. Then you use a lot of computing power to reconstruct the genomes of this collection of organisms." Click here to read this story.
