Fish in the News. Marine biologist Milton Love drives a hybrid car, displays a banner of left-wing revolutionary Che Guevara on his laboratory wall – and has backing from Big Oil. The reason: his finding that oil platforms off California's central coast are a haven for species of fish whose numbers have been dramatically reduced by overfishing. More Fish in the News. Oil and gas platforms abandoned at the end of their lives have become a breeding ground for marine wildlife, says Roger Highfield. The platform stands as tall as the Canary Wharf tower and has reached the end of its working life in the North Sea. But rather than being yesterday's eyesore and bane of the environment, this hulking structure could be tomorrow's ecological darling. Click here to read the rest of this story.

More Fish in the News. Hatchery-reared steelhead trout, like the fry shown above, show increased growth of some parts of their brains, when small stones are scattered on the bottom of their tank, according to a new study by researchers at UC Davis. The brains of those young fish were closer to those of salmon reared in the wild, and the fish also showed behavior closer to wild than to hatchery-reared fish. Click here to read the entire story.
