Fish
in the News.
A small
penguin
stood atop
a tall,
silver-trimmed
red trunk,
the center
of attention
in a second-floor
classroom
at Jenkinson's
Aquarium.
Mostly,
he kept
his back
to the audience.
Once, he
slowly turned
and stared
back at
the 17 children
staring
at him.
Then, LP
— short
for Little
Penguin
— made a
deep honking,
braying
sound —
very much
like a donkey's.
He flapped
his small
wings and
rubbed his
head against
the arm
of senior
penguin
keeper Jen
Mignone,
who stood
next to
him.
Here is one of the Penguins at Jenkinson's Aquarium, which is located at 300 Ocean Avenue
Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742. Click here to go Jenkinson's web site.
"He's saying
hello,"
Mignone
of Dover
Township
told the
children,
all ages
10 or 11
and taking
part in
a recent
three-hour
Junior Biologist
program
at the boardwalk
aquarium.
The program
gives children
a behind-the-scenes
look at
the aquarium
— how sharks
are fed,
how food
is prepared
— even a
chance to
see archer
fish snap
up live
crickets
or to touch
a live horseshoe
crab.

Scientists
at the University
of Illinois
have discovered
an antifreeze-protein
gene in
cod that
has evolved
from non-coding
or "junk"
DNA. Since
the creation
of these
antifreeze
proteins
is directly
driven by
polar glaciation,
by studying
their evolutionary
history
the scientists
hope to
pinpoint
the time
of onset
of freezing
conditions
in the polar
and subpolar
seas. Click
