Exploring
the
mystical
stream
of fish.
It
is said
that,
during
the
creation
time of
world,
Ngoc
village
was
suffering
from
years of
bad
weather,
and
the local
people
were
famished.
One day,
while
working
in the
field, a
couple
from the
village,
who had
no
children,
saw an
egg with
a
strange
shape.
The wife
took the
egg and
put it
into the
stream,
but it
was such
a
strange
thing,
that she
could
not let
it out
of her
hand.
So she
took the
egg home
and put
it in
with the
chickens,
where it
hatched
and a
small
snake
slithered
out.
Frightened
of the
animal,
the
husband
took it
and
threw it
back into the
stream,
but
later when
it
turned
dark,
the
snake
returned
to his
house.
The
couple
then
decided
to let
the
snake
live
with
them.
Since
then,
local
people
have had
enough
water
for
cultivation
and
hunger
was
eradicated.
The
snake
is
respected
as the
saviour
of the
village.

Oddity
Buoys
Guppies'
Life
Expectancy.
Somebody
after
you?
Blending
into the
crowd is
usually
a good
idea.
But not
if
you're a
male
guppy.
The
little
tropical
fish, a
staple
of
freshwater
aquariums,
survives
better
in the
wild if
it has
an
unusual
color
pattern,
say
researchers
from the
University
of
Illinois
and Lake
Forest
College.
It's
been
known
for a
while
that
these
standout
male
guppies
have a
second
important
advantage
--
females
are more
eager to
mate
with
them.
"Being
the rare
guys
seems to
be good
in more
than one
way,"
said U.
of I.
biologist
Kimberly
Hughes,
who led
the
research
reported
in the
June 1
issue of
the
journal
Nature.
The
desirability
of the
"rare
guys" as
mates
was
noted by
Lake
Forest
College
biologist
Anne
Houde in
her 1997
book
Sex,
Color
and Mate
Choice
in
Guppies.
"But it
was
still a
big
mystery
why, if
you go
into a
stream,
the male
guppies
are
fantastically
variable,"
she
said.
"With
trout,
for
example,
they're
more or
less the
same."
