On June
15,
Canada
Post
will
issue a
single
domestic
rate (51
cents)
stamp to
commemorate
the 50th
anniversary
of the
Vancouver
Aquarium.
This
centre
is the
nation's
largest
aquarium,
and is
home to
more
than
70,000
animals,
from
translucent
jellyfish
to
Arctic
beluga,
tropical
piranhas
and
Pacific
salmon.
In all,
there
are some
265 fish
species,
237
invertebrate
species,
and 48
reptile
and
amphibian
species,
along
with
more
than 20
marine
mammal
and bird
species.

An
organization
planning
to build
the
largest
freshwater
aquarium
in the
world
may have
to
abandon
the
project.
The
National
Institute
for
Research
into
Aquatic
Habitats
(NIRAH)
received
£3m in
loans to
develop
a
business
plan and
seek
planning
permission.
Directors
say they
need
£300,000
more or
they
will
have to
call in
receivers
because
the
money is
running
out. The
research
complex
and
aquarium,
four
times
larger
than the
Eden
Project,
was to
be built
at
Stewartby,
Bedfordshire.
The
40-hectare
complex
in an
old
brickworks
is the
brainchild
of an
international
team of
biologists
and
conservationists.

The
Seattle
Aquarium
received
a $1.5
million
grant
from the
Bill &
Melinda
Gates
Foundation,
which is
the
largest
private
grant in
the
aquarium's
history.
The
funds
will go
toward
the
aquarium's
$41
million
capital
campaign,
which
aims to
expand
the
waterfront
facility
by
18,000
square
feet.
Aquarium
officials
say the
campaign
will pay
for
restoring
the
facility's
structural
integrity
on the
pier,
create a
new
exterior
and
entrance,
and
build a
120,000-gallon
"Window
on
Washington
Waters"
exhibit.
The
Shedd
Aquarium
in
Chicago,
Illinois,
will
host a
lineup
of
musicians
as part
of its
summer
concert
series,
Jazzin'
at the
Shedd.
The
concerts
have a
relaxed
setting
and
allow
visitors
to
experience
Shedd's
many
animal
exhibits
while
listening
to the
live
sounds
of jazz,
folk,
samba
and
funk.
This
year's
concert
series
provides
guests
the
chance
to see
the
Shedd's
new
exhibit,
Lizards
and the
Komodo
King.
Featuring
Faust, a
130-pound
Komodo
dragon,
the
temporary
exhibit
opened
last
month.
The
exhibit
houses
nearly
25
species
of
lizards.

just got
an

which

to bring

underwater

aquariums,

Network

developed
the
AquariCam®,

especially

aquarium

Based on

successful
testing
in kelp
forest

Aquarium,

using

has been
developed.
This new
system
comes
with
enhanced
features
and a
significantly
reduced
price
from the
ocean
model.
Our
underwater
IP
camera
system
has
proved
itself
by
operating
continuously
at the
bottom
of the
Monterey
Bay
Aquarium's
kelp
forest
for
three
months.
The new
AquariCam®
brings
this
capability
and
reliability
to
aquariums
at an
affordable
price.
