Visitors
Bitten
at
Shark-Petting
Exhibit.
Almost a
dozen
people
have
walked
out of
the
Newport
Aquarium's
Shark
Central
exhibit
wearing
Band-Aids
after
they
were
bitten.
The
exhibit
has
almost
20
sharks
for
visitors
to
touch.
Some are
babies,
some are
adults
-- 2 to
8 feet
long.
All of
the
sharks
were
chosen
specifically
for
their
behavior.
"What's
the
reaction
to
people
touching
them?
They do
not mind
at all,"
aquarium
biologist
Scott Brehob
said.
"I've
had kids
that are
anywhere
from 8
months
to 2
years to
3 years
touching
these
animals."
Although
the
sharks
did draw
blood
from a
few of
the
visitors
they
bit,
aquarium
officials
said the
injury
is no
worse
than a
paper
cut.
"It's
more
like the
lines of
a
catfish,"
Brehob
said.
"They
are
bristle-type
teeth.
It's
like a
broom."

Piranhas?
Somebody thought a Piranha, like one ones shown to the left, was fished out of the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, PA, but as usual the fish was a Pacu, a close relative of the Piranha.
The Koi, shown to the left, is
like the ones recently seized in a Freeport, Maine, restaurant by local game wardens.

Cash
Donated
to
Aquarium
Project.
An appeal for donations to create one of the world's largest freshwater aquariums has raised
£30,000,
just 10%
of what
is
needed.
The
National
Institute
for
Research
into
Aquatic
Habitats
(NIRAH)
wants to
build
the
development
on an
old
brick
works
site at
Stewartby,
Bedfordshire.
The
county
council
agreed
to lend
£300,000,
on top
of a £3m
loan
already
received,
for the
planning
application.
NIRAH
rejected
the
"red-tape
bound
offer"
and
launched
a public
appeal.

Fisherman
Reels in
a
Piranha?
Piranha
may be
running
in the
Allegheny
River,
but
don't
blame
global
warming.
A home
aquarium
probably
got
dumped,
which is
how a
toothy
predator
more at
home in
the
Amazon
jungle
wound up
on an
angler's
hook off
13th
Street
in
Sharpsburg
yesterday
morning.
"I was
in a
state of
shock,"
said Jim
Rulli, a
former
bricklayer
who
caught
the
tropical
creature
while
angling
for
catfish
with a
nightcrawler.
Rulli,
50,
lives
about a
block
from the
river
and
fishes
almost
every
day. "At
first, I
thought
I had a
really
nice
bluegill.
When I
saw what
it was,
I had to
put my
glasses
on
because
I
couldn't
believe
my
eyes."
He
measured
his
catch at
12
inches,
counted
four
rows of
"big,
sharp"
teeth,
and was
struck
by the
fish's
scarlet
belly.

Koi
Confiscated
in
Maine.
It
was the
bust
heard
around
the
world -
or at
least
around
Maine.
The
seizure
of 10
illegal
koi fish
from an
aquarium
at China
Rose, a
Freeport
restaurant,
has game
wardens
defending
their
actions
and the
owner,
Cuong
Ly,
steamed.
If
released
into
Maine
waters,
the koi
could
threaten
native
species.
And
they've
been
illegal
to
possess
in Maine
for
decades.
Hence
the bust
by
wardens,
after a
couple
of
visits
to try
to
discuss
the
matter
with Ly.
Of
course,
there
are two
sides to
every
story.
Ly says
he'd had
the fish
for 15
years
without
a
problem.
Why
would he
have
taken
the
warden
warnings
seriously?
And
besides
the
emotional
distress
of
losing
his
fish, he
says he
faces
bad
luck,
since
the koi
were
good
luck
charms.
