Bronzed Fish will be part of a new concrete map of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve. Photo by
EARNIE GRAFTON, Union-Tribune
In La
Jolla,
California,
Park
Project
Looks at
Fish.
Early
next
year, a
group of
volunteers
hopes to
construct
a
60-by-30-foot
map of
the
underwater
world
off La
Jolla
Shores.
The
glass-encrusted
concrete
map will
be set
in the
ground
at the
park's
edge. At
least 50
local
fish
species
will be
depicted
in
life-size
bronze
replicas.
The
dozen or
so dive
sites
that
make La
Jolla a
diving
Mecca
will be
marked,
and the
depths
of the
underwater
canyon
there
will be
shown in
deepening
shades
of blue.

In New
York
City
Tadpoles
Fly to
Puerto
Rico.
While
many of
New
York's
snow
birds
head
south to
Puerto
Rico for
time in
the sun,
a recent
batch of
first-time
fliers--born
and
raised
in the
city--are
heading
down for
a
different
reason:
to save
their
own
species.
And
tadpoles
generally
do not
fly,
unless
they are
part of
a
reintroduction
program
to save
the
Puerto
Rican
crested
toad,
according
to the
Wildlife
Conservation
Society
(WCS),
which
has
joined
an
ongoing
effort
to save
the
island's
only
native
toad.
Specifically,
animal
husbandry
experts
from WCS
have
successfully
reared
nearly
500
tadpoles
at the
Central
Park Zoo
and
recently
released
them in
Puerto
Rico's
Guanica
State
Forest.

In
Omaha,
Nebraska,
Raising
Elkhorn
Coral.
The
brown
smudge
in the
water
tank
looks
like
something
you’d
scrape
off a
shower
curtain,
but it’s
a sign
of
progress
to Mitch
Carl of
the
Henry
Doorly
Zoo.
After
all, he
worked
for
months
to grow
that
splotch.
“This is
my
biggest
colony
right
here,”
he said,
indicating
the
growth
that
would
have
disappeared
behind a
penny.
It’s a
baby
version
of
Elkhorn
coral, a
Caribbean
species
that
Carl,
supervisor
of
aquarium
invertebrates,
collected
off the
coast of
Puerto
Rico in
August.
