Size Matters
in Fish
Mating.
When it
comes to
mating,
dominant
male green
swordtail
fish let
their tails
do the talking.
Female green
swordtail
fish mature
faster sexually
when they
see males
with larger-than-usual
tails, according
to research
in the United
Kingdom.
Scientists
at the Universities
of Exeter
and Glasgow
say it demonstrates
for the
first time
that sexual
maturation
can come
in response
to visual

In Australia
Fossil Meat
Found in
380-million-year-old
Fish.
Australian
scientists
say they
have found
morsels
of fossilized
muscle—the
oldest vertebrate
tissue ever
known—in
the remains
of two fish
that lived
380 to 384
million
years ago.
Unearthed
in western
Australia
20 years
ago, the
specimens
belong to
two species
of an extinct
group of
primitive,
armored
fish known
as placoderms.
The fish's
remarkably
well-preserved
soft tissues
include
bundles
of muscle
cells, blood
vessels,
and nerve
cells. They
were found
during recent
electron
microscope
scans ...

In San Francisco
Don't Eat
Fish as
Old as Your
Grandmother.
Over-fishing
facilitated
by new technologies
is threatening
the long-term
survival
of deep-sea
fish populations,
a panel
of experts
said here
today. Many
of the fish
living in
the depths
of the ocean
take 30
or 40 years
to reach
maturity
and breed,
so when
too many
of them
are taken
out, there
is no way
to replenish
their population
quickly,
said Selina
Heppell,
a fisheries
biologist
from Oregon
State University
and panelist
at the annual
meeting
of the American
Association
for the
Advancement
of Science.

In Minnesota
Thin Ice
in Subzero
Weather?
Blame the
Fish.
Despite
recent subzero
temperatures,
thin ice
on Lake
Elysian
has caused
several
vehicles
to fall
into the
water -
and authorities
are blaming
the fish.
Waseca County
Chief Deputy
Brad Milbrath
said pockets
of carp
are wearing
down the
ice. So
far, two
pickup trucks
and two
four-wheelers
have fallen
through
the ice
where carp
have pooled
and caused
the ice
to thin
out. The
sheriff's
department
is advising
drivers
to keep
their vehicles
off the
lake.
