This New Butterfly species was discovered by Richard L. Pyle in 400 feet of water off the Kona Coast in Hawaii in 1998. Photo Richard L. Pyle.
Otocinclus batmani,
a newly discovered species, has a bat-shaped mark on its tail, so the discover Pablo Lehmann named this species after the comic book character, Batman.

In
Hawaii
A New
Butterfly
Fish is
Discovered.
The news
broke
this
last
week in
the
local
Hawaiian
newspapers
of a NEW
Butterfly
Fish
that was
discovered
in
Hawaiian
waters
...
Richard
L. Pyle
discovered
and
collected,
for the
first
time, a
NEW
Butterfly
Fish in
400 feet
of water
using a
closed-circuit
rebreather.
He not
only
found
this
fish off
the Kona
Coast,
but
while
diving
off of
Waikiki
the next
day he
collected
two
more. We
contacted
Richard
after
the
story
broke
and
asked
him
about
this New
Fish.
"We had
seen it
on
videotapes
taken
from the
Hawaii
Undersea
Research
Lab
submersible
(University
of
Hawaii),
but we
thought
it was
the same
species
as a
fish
known
from two
specimens
at
Reunion
Island
(off
Africa
in the
Indian
Ocean).
Only
after I
caught
one and
we got
to see
it up
close
and
personal
did it
become
clear
that it
was
probably
a new
species,"
Richard
said.

New
Fish
Species
is Named
after
Batman.
"The
scientific
name
Otocinclus batmani,
alludes
to the hero,
Batman,
of the
comic
adventures,
which
had a
bat
shape
for his
symbol,
referring
to the
single
bat-shaped
vertical
spot on
the
caudal
fin",

Lehmann.

What is
an
Electric
Fish?
You may
know
that an
electric
eel can
produce
very
strong
electricity
to shock
large
animals.
But did
you know
that
some
tropical
freshwater
fishes
use
electricity
for
navigation
and
communication?
They can
use
electricity
to
'feel'
its
environment,
and they
can
'talk'
each
other
using
electrical
signals.
All of
these
electric
fishes
produce
electricity
from an
organ in
the tail
called
an
'electric
organ'.

Where
do
Paddlefish
Live?
Paddlefish
are well
adapted
to
living
in
rivers.
Paddlefish
are
known to
occur
from
large
rivers
throughout
much of
the
Mississippi
Valley
and
adjacent
Gulf
slope
drainages
in North
America.
They
frequent
many
types of
riverine
habitats
but
often
seek out
deeper,
low
current
areas
such as
side
channels,
backwaters,
oxbow
and
other
river-lakes,
and
tailwaters
below
dams.
Paddlefish
are
highly
mobile
and have
been
observed
to move
more
than
2000
miles in
a river
system.
