Guests at the Georgia Aquarium can now swim or SCUBA dive with whale sharks at world’s largest aquarium. Participants may SCUBA dive daily at 3 p.m. or swim at 4:30 p.m. Swim with Gentle Giants registration opens today with the first slots available June 8 for Annual Pass members and July 1 for everyone. The cost for the swim program is $190 and the dive program is $290. Click here to read more.     Scientists at the University of Washington show Zebrafish can Protect us from Hearing Loss. A small striped fish is helping scientists understand what makes people susceptible to a common form of hearing loss, although, in this case, it's not the fish's ears that are of interest. In a new study researchers at the University of Washington have developed a research method that relies on a Zebrafish's lateral line -- the faint line running down each side of a fish that enables it to sense its surroundings -- to quickly screen for genes and chemical compounds that protect against hearing loss from some medications. Click here to read more.       At the Carnegie Institution, A Discovery about many Marine Microorganisms. A startling discovery by scientists at the Carnegie Institution puts a new twist on photosynthesis, arguably the most important biological process on Earth. Photosynthesis by plants, algae, and some bacteria supports nearly all living things by producing food from sunlight, and in the process these organisms release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. But two studies by Arthur Grossman and colleagues*+ reported in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta and Limnology and Oceanography suggest that certain marine microorganisms have evolved a way to break the rules--they get a significant proportion of their energy without a net release of oxygen or uptake of carbon dioxide. This discovery impacts not only scientists' basic understanding of photosynthesis, but importantly, it may also impact how microorganisms in the oceans affect rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Click here to read more.       In Colombia, South America, Harlequin Frog Rediscovered In a Remote Region. After 14 years without having been seen, several young scientists supported by the Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP), have rediscovered the Carrikeri Harlequin Frog (Atelopus carrikeri) in a remote mountainous region in Colombia. The critically endangered Carrikeri Harelquin frog was recently rediscovered by the Project Atelopus team in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Mountains in Colombia's Magdalena department. Colombia is one of the world's richest countries in amphibian diversity with more than 583 species. Unfortunately, in the past several years, there has been a decline in amphibian populations especially in higher elevations in Colombia. Click here to read more.       At the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, Secretions from Frogs Treats Diabetes. Secretions from the skin of a South American frog could provide a new treatment for diabetes, says a University of Ulster scientist. The paradoxical frog, Pseudis paradoxa, secretes a substance from its skin which protects it from infection. But the molecule, pseudin-2, may have another use for humans. Researchers found that it stimulates the release of insulin, the vital hormone which is deficient in diabetes sufferers. Click here to read more.     In Jammu, Northern India, Srinagar to have Aquarium on Dal Lake soon. As a major tourist attraction, Srinagar will soon have a big aquarium to be located on the banks of the famed Dal Lake and at the foot of Shankaracharya hill at Gagribal near here. The aquarium will have a 200 meter long tunnel with aqua caves and house about 200 species of ornamental fish. It will be a centrally heated building to withstand extreme low temperature during winter.
