Whale
Watching.
Hey Bailey
Brothers, I
stayed home
this weekend
and went
whale
watching.
While the
grey whales
seemed to be
taking the
weekend off,
we saw other
interesting
residents.
Among them
was a fin
whale!
Despite
being the
second
largest
animal on
earth, the
boat had a
hard time
keeping up
with this
fast moving
whale. We
were also
lucky to
spot two
pods of
Risso's
dolphins
which are a
very large
pelagic
species.They
traveled in
pods of 10
to 20 which
was much
smaller than
the common
and
whitesided
dophins that
we saw who
traveled in
pods that
numbered
into the
hundreds.
I've
attached
some of
the pictures
(shown

Coral reef

At the

Freed
Baby Shark
Heads for
the Border.
Shark
enthusiasts
are invited
to keep
track of a
young white
shark
returned to
the wild by
the Monterey
Bay Aquarium
six weeks
ago. So far,
it has
traveled
past the
southern tip
of Baja
California
and is
heading
toward
waters off
the Mexican
mainland, no
passport
required.
The shark’s
whereabouts
are
monitored by
the
electronic
tracking tag
it is
carrying,
which is
delivering
near
real-time
information
on its
position –
information
the public
can track
online,
where his
movements
are updated
and mapped
almost on a
daily basis.
The male
shark,
released on
February 5
after 162
days at the
aquarium, is
the first
shark
released
from the
Outer Bay
exhibit to
carry two
different
tracking
tags. All
three white
sharks
exhibited at
the aquarium
since 2004
have
survived and
thrived
following
their
release. As
with the two
previous
sharks, he
carries one
tag that
logs where
he travels,
including
the water
temperatures
and depths
he favors.
That tag is
programmed
to pop free
on July 2,
when it will
transmit its
stored data
via Argos
satellite to
researchers
at the
aquarium and
at Stanford
University’s
Hopkins
Marine
Station in

In Tulsa,
Oklahoma,
Aquariums
Can Teach
Children
Responsibility.
She doesn’t
know it yet,
but Alaina
Molinar is
about to
learn a hard
lesson. With
the recent
passing of
Bubbles, her
pet
goldfish,
she wants to
set up a new
aquarium.
But there’s
a trade-off.
“When she
starts
cleaning her
room a
little bit,”
her father,
John Molinar,
will think
about
getting his
9-year-old
daughter a
larger fish
tank to keep
on her own.
Dropping
into one of
his favorite
local fish
stores,
Molinar was
with Alaina
and
4-year-old
Aven to buy
supplies for
the family’s
larger
saltwater
aquarium.
He’s been
into the
hobby “since
I was their
age,” he
said. “I’ve
done it
forever.
I’ve always
enjoyed it,
and I think
it’s
important to
get them to
understand a
lot about
responsibility
... and
learn the
importance
of taking
care of an
animal,” he
said. The
children,
wide-eyed at
all of the
eye-level
creatures in
the store’s
well-maintained
displays,
can’t get
enough.
“It’s just
really about
developing
responsibility,
like
cleaning
your fish
tank out,”
Molinar
said. “It
also helps
them
understand
the value in
life of
caring for a
living
creature.” Click

New Tool
Determines
the Age Of
Anchovies.
Biologist
Pablo
Cermeño
Villanueva
defended his
PhD thesis
at the
University
of the
Basque
Country,
providing a
tool to
determine
the age of
anchovies
with greater
accuracy on
a monthly or
even weekly
basis, thus
enabling
studies of
the earliest
phases of
life to be
undertaken.
The European
anchovy
is a coastal
pelagic
species of
great
importance.
Not only
does it
support an
important
fishing
industry,
but it is
also
fundamental
in marine
growth
chains. The
characteristics
of this
small fish
are: a short
life cycle,
seasonal
migrations,
high growth
rates, first
reproduction
at an early
stage, a
long
egg-laying
period and
schooling
behaviour.
All this
gives rise
to
considerable
inter-annual
fluctuations
– given the
variability
of stock
replacement
by juvenile
fish, these
being highly
vulnerable
to
environmental
conditions. Click

Callers during this Show
Mike from Wisconsin calls and
says he got a Rainbow fish that has kind of lost its balance
and is swimming at an odd angle.
Jay from Indiana
calls and says he got a new 300-gallon horse watering trough
that he will use in his fishroom. Tom and Nevin talk with
Jay about the trough and his fishroom.
The Bailey Brothers
encourage YOU to call Pet Fish Talk
during the show and talk about your pet fish.
