45-Second
Video of
a Flying
Fish
It is claimed to be one of the longest recorded flights of this acrobatic animal. The fish was completely
airborne for 45 seconds. This beats one previous, impressive report from an American researcher in the 1920s of 42
seconds. The animal is seen traveling parallel to a ferry, which itself is motoring at about 30km/hour (20mph). Click

Scientists have discovered a completely new trait in a small Western Atlantic fish known as Mangrove
Rivulus. This fish, also known as the mangrove killifish, is native to the Americas and is about two inches long.
According to a team of scientists on an excursion trip to Belize and Florida, the fish lives in logs and breathes fresh
air for months at a time. The experienced team has named this particular aspect of the fish as "logpacking". The team
speculates that the logs might serve an additional purpose, that of acting as cheap transport when storms send the wood
drifting. However, proving this will require additional research. Click

Three weeks diving in the reefs of Tobago may appear to be an idyllic pursuit, but for coral reef
biologist Hayley Rose, it’s all in a day’s work. A keen diver since the age of 14 and a Marine Biology graduate from
Plymouth University, UK, Rose worked as a science officer for Coral Cay Conservation, a London-based nongovernmental
organization, in Honduras for six months in 2005. In October 2005, she joined a team of four other coral reef biologists
from Coral Cay to assist the Tobagonian-based Buccoo Reef Trust (BRT) in assessing coral bleaching along the Caribbean
coast of Tobago. Despite her previous experiences in conservation projects, Rose was shocked at the extent of the damage
she saw in Tobago. “My first impression was of the Alps, there was such a stark whiteness to the coral,” she says. Click

Child
Hospitalized
after
Drinking
Fish
Medication.
A toddler has been treated in hospital after drinking a commercially available product for treating
aquarium fish parasites. The three-year old girl drank up to two ounces of a medication based on 0.075% malachite green,
which is designed for treating whitespot and fungus on aquarium fishes. She was found with blue lips and nails by her
father and taken to casualty, where she was awake and crying, with signs of a medical condition called cyanosis; a
disorder which causes the skin and mucus membranes to turn blue due to a decrease in blood oxygen levels. The girl's
head, hands, arms, feet and legs had turned blue and she was also suffering from methemoglobinemia (MetHb) - a higher
than normal presence of a non-oxygen carrying form of haemoglobin in the blood. She was treated with methylene blue
(coincidentally another chemical also used to treat fungal diseases in fish) and responded rapidly by turning pink,
making a recovery after 20 hours in intensive care. Special thanks to Robert in New Jersey for this story.
