The Mbuna Babies are about 3-Weeks Old.
This video shows some of the baby Mbunas born in Tom's 55-gallon Mbuna Aquarium. There were 31-babies from a female Socolofi's mouth. Tom put them in a 29-gallon aquarium. When first seen they were about 5/16ths of an inch long, which is about 8 millimeters. About 3-weeks later, as shown in the video above, they are about 15/16ths of an inch long, which is about 24 millimeters. So they have approximately tripled in length in 3-weeks. This means their mass or weight is probably about 27-times bigger!! These numbers are fun to think about, but it's much more fun to watch them. Everyday they learn to do something new. Tom and Nevin talk about them at the beginning of this show. You are invited to call during the show and talk about these fish or any fishy topic that interests you.
The fish, shown above, is a
so-called "OB Morph", which is an
abbreviation for
"Orange Blotch". It's a dominant mature male about 5" long and lives in Tom's Mbuna Aquarium. It's probably a so-called Red Zebra, which has the scientific name Pseudotropheus
Maylandia estherae. But there are
OB patterns in other
Mbuna species. So this may not be a
Zebra. Whatever it is, it is a dazzling beauty with a tremendous metallic sheen.
The fish, shown in two pictures just above, also live in Tom Mbuna Aquarium, and both are also mature male Red Zebras. Tom will talk about them during the show.
Fish in the News from Robert in New Jersey
Hi Tom & Nevin, Here are this week's Fish in the news. I wanted to let you know that the barrel-eyes were not what looks like the eyes on the grey part of the head those are its nostrils the eyes are the strange green objects in the transparent part of its head. Your Friend, Robert in NJ
Ronnie from
Missouri
calls and
says that he
plans to
start
breeding Plakat Betta
Fish again,
that heordered some
Killifish
eggs, and he plans to
turn his
garage into
a nice fishroom
with a
ventless
wall heater.
After
Ronnie's
call Tom and
Nevin
express some
concern
about
ventless
wall heaters
and wondered
if they were
really safe.
The next day
Ronnie sent
an email
saying, "Hey
guys i do
heating and
cooling for
a living, u
can get a
Warmglow
ventless
wall heater
that will
work. u need
to know the
footage of
the space
and get a
heater to
fit it, and
u can bring
fresh air in
to cover the
needs of the
heater ...
Ronnie from
Missouri"
Rod from Elk
Grove,
California,
calls and
talks about
getting the
best
compatible
mixture of
Mbunas for
his
400-gallon
aquarium.
Tom and
Nevin say
they don't
have any
experience
with this
size Mbuna
aquarium,
but they
have seen a
1000-gallon
Mbuna
aquarium
that is very
successful
with all kinds of
Mbunas. So
any
assortment
of about 50
to 80 Mbunas
should work.
The Bailey Brothers
encourage YOU to call Pet Fish Talk
during the show and talk about your pet fish.
Video of
Glowlight
Tetras
Spawning.
Hello Tom
and Nevin,
Well again I
am
astounding
myself. My
Glowlight
Tetra's
spawned yesterday.
I managed to
get a pretty
terrible
quality
video of it,
and I have
put it up on
Vimeo. The
link is
http://www.vimeo.com/3421470
At around 9
seconds you
can just
make out the
actual
spawn. Sorry
my friend
the wedding photographer
wasn't
around and
it all
happened in
about 20
minutes.
Hopefully
they will do
it again
someday and
I can get
some better
photos and
video. Next
stop Neons,
and
hopefully
some day the
Cardinals.
