Weekly Fish ID-Quiz - Just for Fun !!
Each week we post some new pictures here on the Listening Guide for this week's show, and we leave the names off. It will be a good exercise for you to try to identify the item in each picture. Some pictures will probably be easy to identify, but others will probably be difficult. Tom and Nevin will identify each picture during the first few minutes of this show.
Dear Tom & Nevin, just wanted to follow up on a previous item I'd e-mailed to you: thanks to
people speaking out against Conservatives & their Infernal Penny Pinching, this last evening alone, PBS entertained/enlightened and enriched my day with a pair of wonderful programs. NOVA's "Mt. St.Helens: Back from the Dead" which gave many previously unknown details about the volcano's cataclysmic eruption in 1980, how it devastated the region's ecosystem including Spirit Lake.
What's even more fascinating about this, is the ultimate tenacity of Life in all of it's myriad forms. Scientists discovered that some small subterranean animals survived the horrendous explosion and it's aftermath! And despite being rendered terribly acidic, lifeless, ''hopelessly'' polluted and bacteria-ridden by the eruption, they also detailed how, within a span of perhaps 3 years, Spirit Lake was once again clean and capable of sustaining life! Apparently by the natural processes of wind and returning birds, etc. reintroducing simple phytoplankton to the deadly waters! Other plants and the beginnings of microscopic and eventually larger aquatic life soon followed.
The second program was an episode of the long-running series 'Nature' detailing the live cycle and spawning ordeals undertaken by Salmon! To sum up, please NEVER allow PBS to be taken for granted any more than you'd allow our National Parks, Free Press, the Public Library System or the Internet Itself, let alone the Right to VOTE to be!
Here endeth my little sermon, so if only via your fingertips, get outside, get into nature, and Revel in her wonders!
T.T.F.N., my Friends & Fellow Naturalists :)
Sincerely Yours, ~Brandon :)
