Weekly Fish ID-Quiz - Just for Fun !!
Each week we post some new pictures here on the Listening Guide for this week's show, and we leave the names off. It will be a good exercise for you to try to identify the item in each picture. Some pictures will probably be easy to identify, but others will probably be difficult. Tom and Nevin will identify each picture during the first few minutes of this show.
Fish in the News from Brandon in West LA
Hi Tom & Nevin :) I first learned of the following 'Plants Only' Filtration methods thanks to an article in the April 2010 issue of TFH, http://www.tfhmagazine.com/blogs/2011/09/22/aquaculture-gets-more-efficient/ and one day when I have my own fish room set up here @ home, I hope to be able to use a similar set of techniques, combined with (small scale) aquaponic farming. If at all possible, I encourage EVERYONE to get a copy of the magazine issue (which can also be found by subscribing to TFH Digital) and learn, learn, learn.... In the meantime, here is a shorter explanation of the filtration system used in his professional hatchery by the author: http://goliadfarms.com/pages/about/plant_filters.htm
T.T.F.N.!!
~Brandon in West L.A. :)
Web from Lake Jackson, Texas, calls and tells Tom and Nevin that he caught another catfish from a small muddy pond, and that he's named it, Muddy. Web also tries several times to help Tom correctly pronounce "bobbler" or was it "bobbeler". Web recently turned 9-years old and is a wonderful caller!

Chris from Grand Rapids, Michigan, calls and says he tried Nevin's suggestion to spray off dirty Penguin Filter cartridges with water from a high pressure nozzle, and it works great, which saves lots of money.
;^ }
Kathleen from Clovis, California, calls and has a list of things to talk about! First, there is a correction about the Toad Fish in San Francisco. Then there are interesting tips about determining the gender of both types of Emperor Tetra. She says Fluorite is more expensive than Laterite but better in planted aquariums. She also has comments about the T5 fluorescent bulbs in her 30-gallon planted aquarium, about her Peacock Gudgeons, about making ceramic caves for her aquariums, and about recycling free plastic buckets from a bakery. Every one of her comments involve things that dedicated aquarists like to talk about! ;^ }
