Why did the fish in the video below win? Listen
to interviews with Koi fish owners and explore the
culture of Koi with AKCA Judge Doug Dahl.
The Grand
Champion Koi,a Gin
Rin Showa
about 18
inches long,
It's unusual
that an 18"
Koi is
selected as champion.
The Koi in this video,
that swims
over the other Koi, isthe
28" Gin Rin Ochibai Shigura, that
was judged
second
in a very
interesting
decision.
More than 200 Koi were entered in this show
by many people from many places some nearby and
some far away. There were also many booths staffed
with people selling Koi and special food for Koi,
plus ponds, pond equipment, medications, T-shirts
and jewelry with Koi themes, and many other interesting
items.
All of this was happening in one large building
with lots of people enthusiastically looking at
the Koi and learning more about this unique hobby.
I got to the show at about 10:00 AM on Saturday
morning, and left at about 5:00 PM. I left tired,
but I'd seen lots of Koi and learned a lot more
about Koi. Best of all I'd met and talked to lots
of very nice people.

The Judges !!
All the the prizes were determined by a team
of six judges, who spent over six hours carefully
evaluating all of the fish. In the end the 18" long
Gin Rin Showa, shown at the top of this page, was
awarded the Grand Championship. This was an unusual
decision, because a much bigger Koi usually wins.
Head
Judge Doug Dahl,
is standing to the left in a short-sleeve
shirt and pointing at a particular Koi.
The three men on the right are also
judges.
Four of the Six Judges,

in a large tub and discussing the merits of
each fish.
